Assessment and quantification of the anthropic impact on the posidonia oceanica seagrass meadow ArchiMer
Alami, Sami; Bonacorsi, Marina; Clabaut, Philippe; Jouet, Gwenael; Pergent-martini, Christine; Pergent, Gerard; Sterckeman, Aurore.
The regression of seagrass meadows has been extensively studied over the past few years. Although the causes of this regression may be locally natural, it is more generally related to human impact. In the framework of the HalGolo (2010) and CoralCorse (2013) oceanographic campaigns, acoustic data (mosaic of sonograms and bathymetry), validated by field data (Scuba diving, ROV), were acquired at depths of -10 m and -50 m at the NATURA 2000 site “Grand Herbier de la Plaine Orientale” (Western Mediterranean, Corsica). Processing of this data provided evidence of the scale of this mechanical degradation (trawling scars, mooring, etc.), and enabled its quantification with regard to surface area and scar density. The main degradation was observed between -20 and...

Chemical contamination and sediment toxicity along the coast of Corsica ArchiMer
Galgani, Francois; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Orsoni, Valerie; Costantini, Louis; Boissery, P; Calendini, S; Andral, Bruno.
Trace metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni, Co, Zn, Hg, As, Mn, Al, Fe, and Li) and organic compounds (PCBs, PAHs, lindanes, and DDT and its degradation products) were measured in coastal sediment samples from 27 sites in lagoons and along coastal areas of Corsica. An oyster embryo bioassay evaluated the toxicity of sediments from sites in three coastal lagoons (Urbino, Diane, and Biguglia) and the west coast of Cape Corsica. Despite contamination levels generally lower than those in other Mediterranean coastal areas, contamination is found in specific sites in Corsica and includes natural arsenic contamination on the east coast, insecticide pollution (persistent lindane and DDT) in many areas, both cadmium and lead contamination around Sagone, general contamination...

Connectivity patterns of coastal fishes following different dispersal scenarios across a transboundary marine protected area (Bonifacio strait, NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Koeck, Barbara; Gerigny, Olivia; Durieux, Eric Dominique Henri; Coudray, Sylvain; Garsi, Laure-helene; Bisgambiglia, Paul-antoine; Galgani, Francois; Agostini, Sylvia.
The Strait of Bonifacio constitutes one of the rare transboundary Marine Protected Areas (MPA) of the Mediterranean Sea (between Sardinia, Italy and Corsica, France). Based on the hypothesis that no-take zones will produce more fish larvae, compared to adjacent fished areas, we modeled the outcome of larvae released by coastal fishes inside the no-take zones of the MPA in order to: (i) characterize the dispersal patterns across the Strait of Bonifacio; (ii) identify the main potential settlement areas; (iii) quantify the connectivity and the larval supply from the MPAs to the surrounding areas. A high resolution hydrodynamic model (MARS 3D, Corse 400m) combined to an individual based model (Ichthyop software) was used to model the larval dispersal of fish...

Diversification des techniques de pêche artisanales en corse. Pêche de la crevette Pandalide plesionika edwards II. Technique - prospection - étude biologique - commercialisation ArchiMer
Guennegan, Yvon.
INTRODUCTION : « The fishing industry is still flourishing » but in Corsica as elsewhere, it has already been declining; sea floors are getting depleted. Several vessels have laid up. Where are we in 1989? Corsica fishing is strongly seasonal. The bulk of the activity takes place from spring time to early fall and focuses on bottom fish and sea crayfish. Three types of fishing can be identified: - Trawl fishing on the eastern coast plateau, (16 trawlers). - Trammel fishing to catch rock fish and sea crayfish on the western coast of the island (300 low power and tonnage ships, i.e. 50 KW and 4TJB). - Pond fishing (a few small units). Total catching amounts to roughly 1 000 tons. The fishing fleet is very dispersed along 1 080 km of coast and sometimes faces...

Environmental DNA for detecting Bulinus truncatus : A new environmental surveillance tool for schistosomiasis emergence risk assessment ArchiMer
Mulero, Stephen; Boissier, Jérôme; Allienne, Jean‐françois; Quilichini, Yann; Foata, Joséphine; Pointier, Jean‐pierre; Rey, Olivier.
Under ongoing climate changes, the development of large‐scale monitoring tools for assessing the risk of disease emergence constitutes an urging challenge. This is particularly the case for snail‐borne diseases such as the urogenital bilharziasis that emerged in Corsica and threat European countries. The expansion of this tropical disease mainly relies on the local presence of competent snail hosts such as Bulinus truncatus. Unfortunately, very little is known about the actual repartition of freshwater snails worldwide which makes new emergences difficult to predict. In this study, we developed two ready‐to‐use environmental DNA‐based methods for assessing the distribution of B. truncatus from water samples collected in the field. We used two approaches, a...

Etude bathymetrique et sedimentologique des etangs de Diane et d'Urbino en Corse. ArchiMer
Longere, Paul; Dorel, Didier; Marin, Jean.
2 ponds (or lagoon) were studied in order to establish the economic possibilities of their exploitation for oysters. Bathymetric and sediment maps were produced using methods described. They indicate a morphological similarity between the ponds, with a superficial broken bed and a regular, flat or gently sloping bed beyond 7 m, the general form reflecting the aerial relief of the adjacent `coast'. The deeper regions had mud or clay sediment, while the edges of the ponds were covered with sand. In more detailed studies it was evident that the banks of Diane were more regular and steep than those of Urbino, and that only in the latter was there a good relationship between the depth of water and the carbon/nitrogen ratio. Differences are thought to relate to...

Évolution récente et sédimentation des plates-formes continentales de la Corse ArchiMer
Pluquet, Fabrice.
This work aimed at displaying and studying morphological and sedimentological features of Corsican seafloor from the coast to depths of -100m. It also aimed at a better knowledge of sediment dynamics under hydrodynamic conditions, and at a reconstitution of the late Quaternary shorelines evolution. Careful analysis of the bathymetry has revealed a very contrasted morphology between the different areas of Corsican shelves, as it has been displayed on an synthetic geomorphological map. In addition, an homogeneous and overall map of surficial sediments of the Corsican shelves seabed was established and two areas, the Balagne and Agriates' platforms to the North of Corsica, and the Bonifacio Straits to the South, were mapped into details. The various...

Guide méthodologique pour l'élaboration des dossiers de demande d'autorisation d'Installations Classées pour la Protection de l'Environnement (ICPE) en matière de pisciculture marine pour la région Corse ArchiMer
Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Sauzade, Didier; Ravoux, Georges; Coves, Denis.
Sea fish farms with production of more than 20 tons per year in France must obtain two operating licences: (i) one for Sea Farming (AECM), with the aim of ensuring that the granted site and use of the maritime public domain for exploitation will respect all restrictions of general interest; (ii) one for regulating Facilities Classified for the Protection of the Environment (ICPE). Although the first one requires a relatively simple licence request file, the second one demands a very complete file, which includes, beyond the notice of exploitation information, a complete impact study, as well as a hazards study and a health and safety notice. In this context, petitioners in Corsica (adjustment of status or new exploitation) are faced with the same...

Malacological survey in a bottle of water: A comparative study between manual sampling and environmental DNA metabarcoding approaches ArchiMer
Mulero, Stephen; Toulza, Eve; Loisier, Anaïs; Zimmerman, Meryl; Allienne, Jean-françois; Foata, Joséphine; Quilichini, Yann; Pointier, Jean-pierre; Rey, Olivier; Boissier, Jérôme.
To assess the effect of anthropogenic activities on ecosystems, it is of prime importance to develop new tools enabling a rapid characterization of ecological communities. Freshwater ecosystems are particularly impacted and threatened by human activities and need thorough attention to preserve their biodiversity and the ecological services they provide. Studying such ecosystems is generally difficult because the associated organisms are hard to sample and to monitor. We present a ready-to-use environmental metabarcoding protocol to characterize and monitor the freshwater gastropods communities from water samples. The efficiency of this new tool was compared to a classical malacological survey at 19 sampled sites from 10 distinct rivers distributed over...

New data concerning the coralligenous atolls of cap corse: an attempt to shed light on their origin ArchiMer
Pergent-martini, Christine; Alami, S; Bonacorsi, Marina; Clabaut, Philippe; Daniel, Boris; Ruitton, Sandrine; Sartoretto, Stephane; Pergent, Gerard.
A new coralligenous morphotype named ‘atolls’ was discovered in 2011 in northern Cap Corse (Western Mediterranean Sea). With the aim of inventorying and characterizing these structures, and to attempt to shed light on their origins, two oceanographic campaigns (using e.g. side scan sonar, multibeam echosounder, sparker, ROV and submarine with 3D photogrammetry) were carried out in 2013 and 2014, in this sector, and in the south of the island in search of similar structures. Off Cap Corse, nearly one thousand atolls were identified between 105 and 130 m depth; the majority of them are situated between 110 and 125 m depth. These atolls are generally grouped (several tens to several hundred) and are to be found in two main sectors, situated between 22 and 31...

On the anatomy of Gnosonesima mediterranea sp.n. from Corsica (Plathelminthes, Lecithoepitheliata) with special emphasis on its genito-intestinal connections OMA
Martens, P.M.; Schockaert, E.R..
Gnosonesima mediterranea sp. n. from algae in the Bay of Calvi (Corsica) is described. It is the first record of a Gnosonesima-species from the Mediterranean. The pharynx and the genital organs are extensively described at the light microscopic level from 1 µm Epon sections. The male "accessory organ" is revealed to be an andro-genito-intestinal connection with a high similarity with the female genito-intestinal connection. The taxonomic position of the Lecithoepitheliata is discussed.

Origine et devenir de la matière organique au sein du micro-estuaire temporaire de Fiume Santu (L’Agriate, Haute-Corse) ArchiMer
Massey, Jean-laurent.
In relation with meteorological, hydrological and topographic characteristics, Corsica has a very large number of temporarily open/closed micro-estuaries. Agriates contains several of them, including the Fiume Santu’s temporarily micro-estuary. These ecosystems are specific because of their sporadic connection with the sea. The opening and closure depends on both the river flow and the presence of the Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile “banquettes”. Characterization of the global functioning was based on a multiparameter approach (particulate matter and dissolved inorganic matter descriptors, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope, phytoplankton communities), in order to qualify and quantify the organic matter (OM), along an estuary – coastal zone gradient. The OM...

Persistent establishment of a tropical disease in Europe: the preadaptation of schistosomes to overwinter ArchiMer
Mulero, Stephen; Rey, Olivier; Arancibia, Nathalie; Mas-coma, Santiago; Boissier, Jerome.
BackgroundGlobal changes promote the spread of infectious diseases worldwide. In this context, tropical urogenital schistosomiasis is now permanently established in Corsica since its first emergence in 2013. The local persistence of the tropical pathogens (schistosomes) responsible for urogenital schistosomiasis at such latitudes might be explained by (i) the presence of its intermediate host, the snail Bulinus truncatus, (ii) the recurrent local reseeding of schistosomes by their vertebrate hosts (either human or animal) every summer, and/or (iii) the maintenance and survival of schistosomes within their snail hosts over winter.MethodsIn this study we conducted an ecological experiment to assess the ability of temperate and tropical schistosome strains to...

Seafloor litter from the continental shelf and canyons in French Mediterranean Water: Distribution, typologies and trends ArchiMer
Gerigny, Olivia; Brun, Melanie; Fabri, Marie-claire; Tomasino, Corinne; Le Moigne, Morgan; Jadaud, Angelique; Galgani, Francois.
Seafloor litter has been studied both on the continental shelves (by trawling during 24 years) and in canyons (by ROV) of the French Mediterranean sea Water (FMW). On the continental shelf, mean densities range from 49.63 to 289.01 items/km2. The most abundant categories were plastic, glass/ceramics, metals and textiles. Trend analysis shows a significant increase in plastic quantities during the study period. Plastics accumulate at all depths, with heavier items being found in deeper areas, while the continental slope-break appears as a clean area. The spatial distribution of litter revealed the influence of geomorphologic factors, anthropic activities, shipping route, river inputs. All the canyons are affected by debris but coastal canyons (Ligurian Sea...

Spatio-temporal organization patterns of demersal assemblages of the east coast of Corsica (Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Gaertner, Jean-claude; Bertrand, Jacques; Samani, D; Souplet, Arnauld.
The paper deals with the spatio-temporal organization patterns demersal assemblages along the east coast of Corsica. We analysed data collected by the first standardized experimental bottom trawl surveys performed in this region from 1994 to 1999 (MEDITS programme). The use of a multiway table method (STATIS-CoA) showed that the spatial organization pattern of the demersal assemblages of eastern Corsica was highly stable during the period studied. This pattern was structured around three bathymetric areas (i) the continental shelf (between 50 to 200 m depth), (ii) the upper slope (from 200 to 500 m) and (iii) the deeper slope (from 500 to 800 m), but it did not show any heterogeneity in relation with latitude. Along the cast coast of Corsica-characterized...
